In his infancy, Mario Barwuah has a lot of life threatening complications with his intestines and had to go through a series of operations to overcome his medical condition. Mario’s health condition and the cramped living conditions that the Barwuah family were living it forced them to seek the help of the social services and it was suggested by the social services that Mario be fostered. So in 1993, Mario was entrusted to an Italian foster family – the Balotellis.

In the beginning, Mario used to stay with the Balotellis during the weekdays and used to spend the weekends with his biological parents, but after a few months it was arranged for Mario to be completely fostered by the Balotellis’. Mario’s foster parents were of an Italian Jewish heritage and lived in a large house and was taken care of well. His football talents were spotted early and by the age of 15 was making his debut in the Serie C1 league. When Mario Balotelli started becoming famous, his biological parents asked for his return, but Mario did not oblige and stated that his biological parents just wanted him back because of the popularity he had gained. As Mario was not adopted by the Balotellis’ he has to wait till his 18th birthday to get an Italian citizenship so that he could play for the Italian national team.
